God said "We need dem
feets"
As you all know, I along with many lost a
great friend and legend, Buddy Miles. Buddy was my close friend and mentor, but he has now
joined that great group of players in the sky!
I stayed with Buddy the last week of his
days here on earth, and was very thankful we got to laugh together one last time. As weak
as he was at that time, he was still in great spirit. I sang to him at his bed side as he
smiled and just moved dem feets!
I got to experience performing with Bud on
the road, and we just had a blast. Buddy was and still is the kind of spirit we all should
learn to grow from. In the last few years I knew Buddy he was very happy, and talk about
funny! What a character he was.
He and I always talked about recording
together, and we very well got to do so, which is on our new 'Miles To Go' cd. I had
recorded the song 'Hey Joe' with Twenty Four Seven the month before Buddy and I met. Its
funny because I just put the song in the vault with all my other recordings. I just did
not know if I would ever do anything with it. When Buddy heard the song start to play, he
just lit up and said 'hit record'! It was a one take track I like to call it, and the rest
is history. He was so happy and into the spirit of the music. Also being great friends
with Jimi Hendrix that he spoke so much of to me, it was the perfect song. He told me one
night how much I reminded him of Jimi and SRV because of my spirit and my style. I thought
that was cool!
I was sitting on his drum set here at his
home in Austin just to have a moment as I felt his presence sweep through the room. The
strange thing was as I said Buddy I know you are here, the light went from dim to bright.
No joke! Thats Buddy, always has to have the last word. Or thats just what he thinks! LOL!
'Story Time' was my nickname for Buddy. He
had the best stories about all the people he was friends with and played with. If you dont
know who Buddy Miles was, well you should. If I would have had a recorder and a nickle for
every story he told, I would be a millionare.
I am going to miss you B. You were the best friend
I ever had. From one soul to another!
Always, Randy
